Prepare Plotting Sheet

We know our approximate position from dead reckoning to be 53°38.4S, 74°44.6W. Rounding to the nearest whole degrees, we choose to construct a plotting sheet centered at 54°S, 75°W. We label the latitude and longitude lines accordingly.

Next, we find the positions on the compass rose which are 54° above and below the center line. We draw vertical lines through those points. These are our one-degree longitude lines. We also label these.

Next, we draw a line for our latitude through the minutes scale in the lower right.

Finally, we mark our "DR" position on the chart. The vertical scale in the center measures minutes of latitude. The line we drew through the minutes scale measures minutes of longitude.
